Avoiding Scams & Fraud: Caller ID Spoofing

This month, we’re spreading awareness on one of the most common and convincing scams targeting bank customers today: criminals who impersonate your bank... and can even make it look like we’re the ones calling: Caller ID Spoofing.

Please take a few minutes to read this. Share it with a family member or neighbor who could benefit. And remember: we’re always here if something doesn’t feel right.

How This Scam Works

Scammers have become very sophisticated. Using widely available technology, they can make your phone show a call coming from Solvay Bank’s real phone number, even when it’s not us. This is called caller ID spoofing, and it’s being used across the country to deceive bank customers of all ages.

Here’s what typically happens:

  • You receive a call that appears to be from Solvay Bank.
  • The caller claims there is fraud or a problem with your account and that you must act immediately.
  • They create a sense of urgency or fear: “your account will be frozen,” “you’ll lose your money,” “we need to verify you right now.”
  • They ask you to provide personal information, move money, or grant them access to your accounts or devices.

Would Solvay Bank Say This?

If a caller says any of the phrases below, it is a scam. Hang up immediately and call us directly at 315-484-2201.

If a caller says this...

Will Solvay Bank say this?

"You need to move your money to a safe account right away."

NEVER

"You'll lose everything if you don't act right now."

NEVER

"Don't go to the branch — they may be part of the problem."

NEVER

"Give me the one-time code that was just sent to your phone."

NEVER

"Let me connect to your computer to fix your account."

NEVER

"Withdraw cash and deposit it somewhere else to protect it."

NEVER

"Don't tell anyone about this call."

NEVER

What To Do If You Get a Suspicious Call

  1. Stay calm. Scammers use fear and urgency to rush you into a mistake. It is always okay to slow down.
  2. Hang up. You do not owe anyone a polite goodbye. Simply end the call.
  3. Do NOT call back using any number the caller gave you. Scammers set up fake callback numbers too.
  4. Call us directly at 315-484-2201 or visit your nearest branch. Use the number from your card or statement.
  5. Do not share your passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or account numbers with anyone who calls you.

Remember This One Thing

Solvay Bank will NEVER call you and ask you to move money, share a one-time code, or grant remote access to your devices.

If you’re ever unsure, hang up and call us directly at 315-484-2201.
